A Good Week Of Alaskan Seascapes

June 28, 2026 by Thom Miller

It was one of those evenings where no matter which direction you looked there was something beautiful to see.

It was a slow movement of light. Almost subdued at first, but growing warmer by the second. I saw the potential, but was awed by the spectacle.

It was an end of world sunset that just became more intense, more fiery and poignant as the sun eased itself over the horizon.

And then in the middle of it, a rainbow started to form, lit by a fiery sun. I was fairly convinced the end of the world was nigh. But no, it’s just Tuesday in Southeast Alaska. So be it.

And then there’s Petersburg in June. Gray makes the green pop! And there’s nothing better than sitting on a harbor side park bench, your feet kicked up on the fence, sipping a rootbeer float and calling your ol lady.

My first view of Kake was of this great water side warehouse. As a builder, a mariner, and a lover of anything that combines the two, I was quite taken.

This is a good build.

When land and whale imitate each other.

Sidekicks!

It was mid morning in Endicott Arm. The bosun came up to me and asked me if I wanted to repo one of our inflatable boats. I looked out the window at the pouring rain, bone soaking cold and mist. I said, “It looks cold and wet out there… but it is one of the world’s best fjords… and I’ve been cold and wet before… Hell yeah, I’ll do it!”

I was damn glad I did. It was beautiful.

I had a great photo session working with waterfalls, icebergs and fjord walls. Fringe benefits of a mariner.
